finally understanding RSS

I think I am probably the last one in the world to finally understand RSS (really simple syndication). I think part of my misunderstanding of the idea was why it was necessary. Well in today's "blog eat blog" world, it is very necessary. As a matter of fact, I have incorporated it right away into one of my daily activities.

With all the information that is flying here and there, I like to stay up to date on some of the latest things that are coming out. This can range from the latest theological news to the newest gadget that will make life even easier. I have begun to check multiple blogs over the last few months and the RSS reader now allows me to plug in the addresses of these blogs so that I receive the newest blog entries into my program as if they are emails.

The advantages that I have found is that I don't have to go looking for the news that I want to see, it comes right to me. Not only this but I am able to keep up on all my friends' blogs. I don't think all of the RSS feeds come into all the different reader programs, but the one that I am using is Mozilla Thunderbird. It sorts through my email as well as the feeds. So there you go for those of you who are bloggers and enjoy this sort of thing, try it out, give it some time and you might find it is a simple way to keep up with the world around you.

gamers are in a class all by themselves

In the last couple days I have seen stories that are surprising. Engadget has some shocking images of people who have been injured by the new Wii (Nintendo's new gaming console). Some of these I guess can be explained. The new feature of this console is that the controllers allow the player to move as if he is really in the game further getting the player involved in the game (finally! a way for gamers to lose calories and still never leave the living room). For instance one person hit a piece of furniture while moving the controllers. However, the one where the girl dislocated her knee trying to spike a tennis ball...or the one where the guy gave his girlfriend the biggest black eye I have ever seen by getting so involved in the game that he swung and hit her...this is downright weird.

To top it all off, Channel 6 reports that in Jacksonville, thieves dug a tunnel to get into a Gamestop. When they arrived they realized that the store had no PlayStation 3's in the boxes so they took 13 XBox 360 consoles instead!! Apparently this does not even phase the cops. I wonder if they have a gamers anonymous...

what was he thinking?

What is it that drives people to do the idiotic things they do? Metro news reports that a man in Arkansas apparently was unhappy with his wife. Does he kill her and that's why he is in the news? nope. This genius rigged a coat hanger from his bedroom door knob to a wire that attached to an electric livestock fence. His wife (i won't say she got shocked...oh, whoops...) had 110 volts coursing through her body but she will be fine. Our moron, however, is facing charges for misdemeanors. If you ask me, anyone who goes to such elaborate measures to torture his wife, deserves to be locked up till he forgets what he did.

what is Haggai talking about?

Here I am at the end of the semester and oddly enough I feel like I could keep going another month. I don't think I have ever felt like that. Don't get me wrong, I am excited the break is here and I can use the rest, but I have this inner conflict.

Today in class we went through the book of Haggai, tough book. When the Israelites returned to Jerusalem after the exile in Babylon, they were focusing on getting their lives and homes back in order. God saw this happening and even though it was he who was working to restore Israel, they left the temple in shambles. Their priorities were completely off. Haggai came on the scene to tell them all, "Hey! Get your priorities straight, God wants your first and your best!"

Thankfully, Israel listened and they worked on the temple. But then a new problem arose. Because the people were working on the holy work of the Lord which he had commanded, they assumed their lives were right with GOd. Haggai, came again to tell them, just because they were in ministry, they were still capable of sin.

Two applications that we drew from this: first, God demands that we do not give him our worst. No he wants our best and he desires for us to put him above our own welfare. Second, even though we might be in ministry or doing good things, does not mean that God is pleased with us. He desires our hearts to be right with Him and that we give him our best.

This exquisite flower can be seen all throughout Hawaii, how interesting that such beauty can become commonplace to some.
