Just watched a pretty incredible movie last night with Jamie and Mary. If you haven't seen Crash, let me throw out a word of warning, it has lots of language and one seen you will want to pass, but the movie as a whole is really powerful. If you can, wait till it comes out on TV edited and tape it because it is well worth it.
Talk about an emotional roller coaster, you want to get close to so many of the characters but every single character (with the exception one) lets you down. But this movie is a lesson in racism that some may feel is cliched, but I have not heard this tagline much. Racism is everywhere, and we all hate it, but you might find that everyone, including you is racist. Maybe you believe that you aren't racist, and that may be true, but think hard about it. When was the last time you cracked a Mexican joke. Or did you ever assume that a black or a latino with tats was a gang member. Were you ever a little afraid to talk to someone from another race because you had negative stereotypes about them? All of this is addressed in the movie and it does its best to expose the attitudes in the most dramatic fashion (which turns out to be pretty heart wrenching).
So many times in the movie I realized that I was so caught up that I had to consciously exhale to relax a little. It was my experience that this movie was the proverbial giving you hope of something and pulling the carpet out from under you.
I am tired of hearing people complain about racism and all that is wrong with the world. Everyone seems more than capable of diagnosing the problem, but when it comes down to it, in this me-me society, we lack the ability to look within ourselves to find that the root of this is sin. Everyone lives in their own code of living. The two most important commands that would change everthing so simply are Love God and love others. Do not just consider other equal! The Bible gives us a far more radical example in Philippians 2: Consider others better than yourselves.
