where is it getting us? WWJD, Christian music, awana, youth group, men's Bible studies... the list goes on and on and one must question the sincerity of those deeply involved in the Christian culture that can quickly saturate our lives. Don't get me wrong, there is nothing bad about doing any of the things listed above. The problems come when we substitute the Christian culture experience with the actual conversion. In other words, have we truly acknowledged that Jesus is the son of God and that He died for our sins and rose from the dead. Are we acknowledging that we are sinners and that only Christ can save us from our sins? Otherwise, to just say I asked Jesus into my heart and not know what that means but going along with the Christian culture and doing all the right things, results in a life that is something, but not Christian.
This was the great problem prior to the 1st Great Awakening of the 1700s. It appeared that the Puritan population had effectively subsituted the Christian culture as "being a Christian" with actually making a decision to follow Christ. All too often, I meet people who tell me that they asked Jesus into their hearts and they felt a warm fuzzy feeling but they have no idea what the decision is that they just made. They don't realize the simple steps that God has laid out for us to become a Christian. It is so simple and yet misperceived.
